Focons ZEROcompany Strategy

Focon has chosen to participate in ProjectZero because:

It is our aim to be a climate conscious organisation. We wish to lower our own energy consumption and thereby limit our CO2 emission for the sake of the environment and at the same time to achieve cost savings. In the long term it is our goal to be able to offer our customers environmentally friendly products through vendor and costumer involvement, and thereby further contribute to the reduction of CO2 emission. ProjectZero is therefore an excellent opportunity for us to take action on the climate issues. We hope through sparring, support and idea generation in the ProjectZero network to achieve our reduction goals even faster. We wish to point out that we, as an organisation, take the climate issues seriously.

Our main efforts on climate issues in recent years have been:

Continuous focus on environmental aspects when developing products, while maintaining the product quality. Among other things, this is done through choice of materials, where Focon's policy for several years has been not to use PVC and other environmentally harmful materials, if this is possible without compromising product quality. Furthermore, we have been working on minimizing waste, waste sorting and recycling.
As part of ongoing renovation, we have switched from natural gas to district heating, which has also had a positive effect on our CO2 emission.

Our future plans for energy savings:

Our energy consumption is divided into 3 scopes;

  • Scope 1: CO2 emission from fossil fuels
  • Scope 2: CO2 emission from electricity and heating
  • Scope 3: Carbon Accounting In The Supply Chain

In 2011 we have focused on minimizing our CO2 emission from scope 1 and 2. Among other things, we have switched from natural gas to district heating. This has had a very positive effect on our CO2 emission, even though the new system was not introduced until medio 2011. Therefore the full benefit of our conversion to district heating will not be seen until next year.

Furthermore, district heating in the Soenderborg area, where Focon is located, will from February 2012 draw heavily on geothermic heat. This factor will lower our calculated CO2 emission substantially. Read more about Green District Heating here

In 2012 we plan:
Replacement / renovation of our ventilation systems for an energy-saving type, which will lower our CO2 emission further.
We plan to replace our light sources and management of these, and we are working on employee behaviour regarding standby consumption and driving habits.
As Focon make many business trips, our objective is to involve this area from the middle of 2012. From 2013 our plan is to involve all our A-suppliers in CO2 reduction as well.

Our specific climate targets:

In 2010 our emission was 252 tons of CO2. Based on this it was our goal is to reduce our CO2 emissions by at least 10% per year in 2011 and 2012. However, we have successfully lowered our CO2 emission substantially more than the targeted 10 % in 2011. Our total calculated emission in 2011 is 199 tons of CO2 - or roughly a 21 % reduction!

By implementing the above mentioned energy saving initiatives, we hope to be able to repeat our outstanding result of 2011 again in 2012.
