A case story: Focon equipment on-board Bombardier’s trains in Scandinavia

For more than two decades Bombardier Transportation has been a leading supplier of trains in Scandinavia. In Denmark and Sweden, their highly successful platforms include the flat-nosed” IC3 and IR4 Flexliners, the OTU Oresund and the Regina fleets. In total these fleets comprise more than 300 trains. Focon is the chosen supplier of information, communication and entertainment equipment.

Overview – Focon supplies

Focon is the system supplier responsible for audio communication system, passenger information, displays, audio entertainment, seat reservation displays and internet access. Audio communication includes Public Address (PA), crew intercom as well as passenger emergency communication.

Audio entertainment

With standard micro-jack headsets it is possible to listen to audio entertainment at the seat.
Entertainment channels can include radio and music channels.

Public Address

An internal loudspeaker system ensures audio information to the passengers. This includes automatic announcements such as announcement of the next stop as well as operational announcements from the driver and the train control centre to inform the passengers e.g. about operational restrictions or delays.
Intercommunication facilities Separate communication between the driver‘s cabs and
the stewards compartment can be established.
Passenger Emergency Communication In some fleets, passengers can contact the driver via talk-back facilities e.g. in the entrance area. The communication is controlled by the driver who can terminate the conversation and/or put a passenger on hold in order to talk to other passengers.

Passenger Information Displays

The visual information systems have the following elements:

Above the door and in the vestibule, passengers can identify car number as well as train destination and calling pattern.
In the compartments, internal displays inform about the next stop as well as progress on the journey and precision relative to the time schedule.
